I was born in a smallish city (kalamazoo) and grew up in a suburb of it (Portage--which was apparently a "city on the grow" and a "city of trees" , but I really have no proof of that.) I got married, had a baby, and moved to the tiny town of Decatur, MI, because it had the house I wanted.
I've grown to love Decatur....and I believe I recently crossed some sort of precipice to small town living: #1....I've purchased manure for my garden.
